Research IT is currently seeking UC Berkeley student applicants for numerous internships starting in fall 2016. These intern positions may last the duration of the academic year, and some positions may include the possibility of summer work. Research Data Visualization and User Experience Design: Berkeley Research Computing is seeking an intern interested in data visualization and user experience design, to design and build dashboards for researchers using the Savio supercomputer. Intern will work with BRC staff to clarify researchers’ needs for dashboards, as well as requirements for reporting and marketing materials for the program. Intern will design and implement visualizations of data for website and print materials. We are exploring data visualization support for research as well, and so this may lead to data visualization work with campus researchers who are BRC partners. Candidates must have experience with user experience design and/or data visualization methods and tools.
Research Supercomputing System Administration: Berkeley Research Computing is seeking an intern interested in supercomputing infrastructure and applications to assist with system administration of the Savio supercomputer. Intern will work with BRC and LBNL staff to install and maintain compute nodes, high-speed networking, parallel file-systems, and associated infrastructure, in support of campus research computing. Candidates must have experience with Linux, a strong understanding of x86_64 server hardware, and an interest in research computing systems.
Container research and development intern: Berkeley Research Computing in conjunction with LBNL/HPCS is seeking an intern interested in development, support and documentation of a new container subsystem called “Singularity”. The intern will work closely with other developers as well as computational scientists on campus to increase mobility of compute across various platforms using Singularity. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, strong understanding of Linux and scripting as well as being motivated to work with various scientific groups and researchers on campus.
Media and documentation intern: The Research Data Management program (a partnership between Research IT and the Library) is seeking an intern to help create documentation and develop an online presence for the program. This includes writing articles for the blog, consolidating information from consultations into support documentation, creating flyers and other marketing material, identifying campus venues for publication and outreach, identifying social media platforms to use, online outreach using Facebook, Twitter, etc. and designing plans for an ongoing outreach strategy. Experience working with data-intensive research is not required, but the intern should have an interest in research, communication, and social media. The intern should have strong writing skills, and be comfortable with social media platforms.
Journalism and media intern: Berkeley Research Computing is seeking an intern interested in supporting written and multimedia communication and outreach. Tasks may include writing research-related news pieces appropriate for a broad audience, monitoring and updating social media, outreach to media outlets, video editing, graphic design for presentations and hand-outs, and/or web design. Intern must have excellent writing skills, and a passion for communicating research, especially in the sciences. Some background in a science domain a plus. User Centered Design intern: Research IT is seeking an intern interested in User Centered Design and Information Architecture to conduct a UCD review of our website. Intern will work with Research IT staff to develop personas, user requirements, and key information needs. These will be combined with organizational goals to develop proposed information architecture(s) for review with the staff, and time-permitting, paper prototypes that can be evaluated with users. Intern must have familiarity with the principles and methodologies of User Centered Design and Information Architecture. Knowledge of user experience design and/or visual design are a plus.
