Welcome to the special Fall 2024 issue of the Research IT newsletter. We hope you learn about some of the many ways we support research across the UC Berkeley campus and beyond. In this issue, we are highlighting our consulting program as it is one of the primary ways we bridge campus technologies and the people who use them. We look forward to learning about your research and finding the most effective ways to collaborate with you.
Bridging Boundaries with Dr. Yogananda Pittman
Through collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Research IT Consulting Team, Dr. Yogananda Pittman, Chief of UC Berkeley Police, exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary partnerships in advancing knowledge and effecting change. Her recently completed doctoral dissertation on women in law enforcement explored the challenges faced by women, particularly women of color, in high-ranking law enforcement roles. Her research now has the potential to influence policy and practice in law enforcement agencies across the country. By identifying barriers and proposing solutions, her work may pave the way for better representation in police leadership and more effective law enforcement institutions altogether.

Introduction to Analyzing L2 Voter Data on Savio for Political and Social Scientists
Prerequisite: Participants must have completed their LDSP/RIT data access request prior to the workshop.
This workshop is designed for political science and social science graduate student researchers who are new to using the Savio computing cluster and L2 voter data. Participants will learn how to work with raw L2 data, including how to access and process it through Open OnDemand and RStudio. The session will cover the basic setup of Savio, including file paths specific to L2 data, and provide hands-on guidance on exporting data from scratch space and integrating it into research workflows.
Attendees will:
- Access and load L2 data via Open OnDemand using R or Python
- Export data from P2/P3 scratch space
- Understand the research value of L2 data and its various applications
- Learn the process for data migration and ongoing support access
- Review guidelines for legal data usage and exporting
