Micronet, a UC Berkeley group for campus IT professionals, celebrated its 25th birthday on October 31, 2014. Founded in 1989, Micronet has become one of the oldest IT-related communities on campus; and also one of the largest, with nearly 800 members.
For people who work in an IT role or have IT responsibilities, posting a question about any aspect of campus computing to Micronet’s mailing list often yields one or more responses within hours. In many cases, these questions also spark well-considered, in-depth discussions. As well, Micronet hosts monthly meetings that provide a forum for sharing best practices, as well as for demonstrating, discussing, and getting feedback on new and upcoming campus services.
Research IT’s Aron Roberts participated in Micronet’s first meeting, 25 years ago, and was particularly active in its early development and growth. He has also continuously managed the group’s electronic mailing list since its inception in 1992.
