The BRC Launch event was reported on iNews in an article titled UC Berkeley Research Computing (BRC) celebrates a new chapter in collaboration:
Campus leaders joined faculty and staff to officially launch the Berkeley Research Computing Program (BRC) at an event in Banatao Auditorium at Sutardja Dai Hall. The BRC Program aims to elevate UC Berkeley’s institutional support for computational research, reflecting a growing reliance on computation across a wide spectrum of research disciplines. Faculty participants in the launch described benefits to research in their disciplines, from identification of Earth-like planets to tailoring treatment for cancer, to text analysis across large corpora of historical newspaper reports. Vice Chancellor for Research Graham Fleming described his support for research computing, followed by AVC and CIO Larry Conrad, who remarked: “In IT every once in a while you get to do something truly transformative and this is one of those moments.” Fleming and Conrad partnered with Chancellor Nicholas Dirks to provide recurring funding to initiate and sustain the BRC Program. This joint executive sponsorship of the BRC Program, a core element of the Research IT portfolio of services, reflects the strong campus commitment to information technology support that advances UC Berkeley’s research mission, and will facilitate the continued recruitment of faculty at the top of their fields.
